The Last Change |
I looked in Sainbuys' yesterday to see what I could get with my last 26p; the answer turned out to be not a lot. I could get a banana at 18p, but not an apple at 35p, I couldn't get a bread roll, because they where 45p plus. I could get some sherbet at 24p, but not much else in the sweet aisle, therefore, I've decided to donate my last 26p to charity; after all there is always someone who could use the money more.
Food over the last 2 days has been very much the same as the previous 5 at breakfast and lunch. I did mix thing's up a little for dinner on Wednesday and have poached eggs on toast, mainly because I was;
a. bored of ratatouille and
b. I needed to rush out to my evening class after work.
On Thursday I had a potion of the bean casserole with mashed potato, and then decided too finish the last of the yoghurt and bourbon creams.
This in itself is a minor miracle, by taking part in this challenge, knowing I couldn't afford to replace anything much for most of the week, I've been really concious of the amount of snack food I eat. As a consequence for the first time in ages I've had chocolate biscuits left to eat throughout the week.
This week challenge has been quite strange; meals have been quite easy to make, and filling but repetitive and simple. I've been eating smaller potions, especially of snack foods, but found I haven't really been hungry. The abandonment of the nasty cheap chocolate would have put of downer on my week, had my lovely workmate not given me a bar of aero chocolate to eat for my birthday, so I haven't missed out there either.
I've also been acutely aware of making sure I'd thought through my day to account for the things I would need. An example is when I was sent over to the other office at work for the last 3 days of the week. on the first day although I took tea bags with me I didn't have a hot drink to have on the bus ride over, by the time I got to work I was gasping, only to find there was no easy access to a kettle. I ended upp having a glass of water. The next day I made up my travel mug before I left the house. I also added an extra potion of dried fruit to my lunch to tide me over on my longer afternoon stretch home.
At the end of the week I have 3 potions of bean casserole, 1 tin of beans, 1/2 pack wheat biscuits, 1 pint of milk, 1 sweet potato 1/2 pack saltanas and a stauma left from my shopping. A lot of this would have gone on feeding Mark last weekend, so I think I can claim a partial victory in planning to feed 2 people for 2 days as part of the challenge.
This week I've learnt a few things. For example by having breakfast before I go shopping and making a shopping list it's much easier to get around the shop without spending too much. Secondly, it seems to be the small sundry things throughout the week that amount to the most money, not the main, list-controlled, shop at the supermarket. A few pounds here and there, for example buying tea at the canteen, really mounts up over the week. I also think that by writing down everything I've eaten and brought ,I've shown on a normal week I probably buy, and therefore eat, much more than I need too.
Things I've done diffidently to save money:
Breakfast: Wheat biscuits, saltanas and milk
Lunch: sandwhiches, 2x oaty mountains, satuma, penguin bar
Dinner: Poached eggs on toast, or bean casserole and mashed potato, yoghurt and bourbon creams.
Drinks: water, hot orange in a travel mug.
Snacks: bourbons creams, saltanas, aero chocolate
Supper: oaty mountains x 2
Things I've done diffidently to save money:
- Taken a travel mug to work/ evening class with a hot drink. Saving: £2.50
- Taken the long route to work to use the free bus. Saving £6.40
Therefore is it possible to live on £10 for 1 week, feeding 2 people for 2 days, without being hungry?
Yes...
But, only if you don't mind eating the same thing over and over all week, you have a few staples in the cupboard, you cook everything from scratch, and you're good at planning ahead. If you're lucky you may even get some change! :)
